Biocide Legislation and Regulatory Requirements
Due to the properties of these substances and the extent to which they are used, there is strict market regulation. Member States, the European Commission and the European Chemicals Agency jointly create the rules and conditions to be followed by manufacturers of active substances, biocidal products and the distribution companies marketing biocides.
The aim is to minimize the extent of biocidal product usage, and to protect human health and the environment. This is accomplished through a demanding registration process (taking several years), during which all the properties of a product are examined. Only those products that meet stringent regulatory conditions will be allowed on the market. The European Union is a world leader in this respect, and such strict regulatory conditions can be found nowhere else in the world.
